Honoring the American Worker

Honoring the American Worker

What are your plans for Labor Day weekend?  Going to a bbq or cookout? Watching college football? Back to school shopping(not here in El Dorado Hills - school started on Aug. 6!)?

Here is a little snippet about the upcoming holiday. According to the Department of Labor,"It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country." What started first as a municipal holiday, spread to the state level, and finally in 1894, it became a national holiday. The proposal for the first holiday included a parade to show "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families(DOL).

Although Labor Day has evolved over the years, take a moment this weekend to pay tribute to the American worker, past and present, on whose shoulders this great country was built.
